How to Choose Quality Branded Gear for Your Business

Short answer: to choose quality branded gear for your business, start with garment brands your team will actually wear, match the decoration method to the item (leather patch or embroidery for hats and polos, screen print for 50 or more matching tees, DTF for small or full-color runs), get a free proof before you pay, and buy from a shop that states its minimums, turnaround and pricing up front and has real reviews.

Cheap branded gear ends up in a drawer. Good gear gets worn for years and puts your logo in front of customers every day. This is the checklist we walk business owners through at our shop in Temple, Georgia.

The 7-point checklist

  1. Pick garments people want to wear

  2. Match the decoration to the item

  3. Get a free proof before you pay

  4. Know the minimums, setup fees and turnaround

  5. Understand quantity pricing

  6. Check real reviews and real work

  7. Order in kits, not one item at a time

1. Pick garments people want to wear

Brand matters more than most buyers expect. Ask what brand and style you are getting, not just "a hat" or "a shirt."

3. Get a free proof before you pay

A good shop sends a digital mockup showing the garment, color, logo size and placement before you pay. If a shop wants payment before you see a proof, keep looking. Here is how our free proofs work.

4. Know the minimums, setup fees and turnaround

Ask three questions before you order: is there a minimum, are there setup or art fees, and when will it be in hand? At Hobbs Peak there is no order minimum, orders of 1 to 4 pieces carry a $15 per-design setup charge (waived at 5 or more), and production is about 10 business days after approval. See our turnaround guide.

5. Understand quantity pricing

Price per piece drops as quantity goes up, but tiers apply per design. For example, a Richardson 112 leather patch hat is $28 each for 1 to 5, $24 each for 12 to 23, and $16 each at 200 or more. Twelve hats in one design cost less per hat than twelve hats split across three designs.

6. Check real reviews and real work

Read Google and Facebook reviews, look at photos of finished orders, and ask for a sample on large orders. A shop that does good work will show it.

7. Order in kits

Many businesses get the best value by ordering a starter kit for each employee, such as a hat, two tees and a hoodie. A 12-person kit like that runs about $93 per person. See the full crew kit breakdown.
