How to Care for Embroidered Apparel and Leather Patch Hats

Short answer: wash embroidered shirts, polos and hoodies inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry low or hang dry. Never iron directly on the stitching. Never put a leather patch hat in the washer, dryer or dishwasher. Spot clean it with a damp cloth and mild soap and let it air dry on a form. Follow those rules and custom gear lasts years, not months.

We make leather patch hats, embroidered apparel and printed shirts every day at our shop in Temple, Georgia, for crews, teams, churches and businesses across the state. This is the same care guide we give every customer at pickup.

How to wash embroidered shirts, polos and hoodies

  1. Turn it inside out. This keeps the stitching from rubbing against zippers, buttons and the drum.

  2. Use cold water and a gentle cycle. Hot water can shrink the garment around the embroidery and cause puckering.

  3. Use mild detergent. Skip bleach. Bleach and harsh stain removers fade thread faster than fabric.

  4. Wash with similar colors. Dark thread on a light shirt can pick up dye from other loads.

  5. Tumble dry low or hang dry. High heat is the number one cause of puckered embroidery. Pull the garment while slightly damp and smooth the design flat with your hand.

How to clean a leather patch hat

  1. Brush off dirt with a soft brush once it is dry.

  2. Spot clean the crown and bill with a damp cloth and a drop of mild dish soap, working in small circles.

  3. Keep the leather patch nearly dry. Wipe it with a barely damp cloth only. Genuine leather darkens slightly with sun and wear, which is part of the look.

  4. Clean the sweatband after hot work days with a damp cloth and mild soap so salt does not build up.

  5. Air dry on a form, such as a coffee can or rolled towel, so it keeps its shape. Keep it away from heaters and dashboards.

How to clean an embroidered hat

Treat it like a leather patch hat: spot clean or gently hand wash in cool water, then air dry on a form. Dishwasher and washing machine cleaning can bend the bill and fray the stitching.

How to iron embroidered apparel

Iron inside out on low to medium heat, or lay a towel or pressing cloth over the design. Never put a hot iron straight on the stitching. It flattens 3D puff embroidery and can scorch thread.

How long does custom embroidery and printing last?

  • Embroidery: usually outlasts the garment. Thread does not crack or peel.

  • Leather patch: sewn on, so it does not peel like a heat-pressed patch. It ages and darkens over time.

  • Screen print: lasts dozens of washes when washed cold and dried low.

  • DTF: stays bright and flexible when it is never ironed directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a leather patch hat in the dishwasher?

No. Dishwasher heat and detergent dry out leather, warp the bill and can shrink the crown.

How do I get sweat stains out of a hat?

Mix a little mild dish soap in cool water, scrub the sweatband with a soft toothbrush, wipe clean and air dry. Avoid soaking a leather patch.

Why is my embroidery puckering?

Usually high dryer heat or hot water. Wash cold, dry low, and smooth the design flat while damp.

How should I store custom hats?

On a hook, shelf or hat rack, not crushed in a bag or under a seat. A crushed crown or bent bill is hard to reshape.
