HATS — WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Leather patch hats are the product that put Hobbs Peak on the map. They occupy the sweet spot between premium craftsmanship and bulk-production reality — they look hand-made because they functionally are, but the process is repeatable enough that we can ship 200 of them in a uniform run without quality drifting from cap one to cap two-hundred.

Every leather patch we make starts as a flat piece of full-grain cowhide (or high-grade leatherette, if you want vegan or color-exact). Your artwork gets transferred to a steel die, the die heats to the right temperature for the material, and the patch is debossed in a single press. For laser-engraved patches we skip the die and burn the artwork directly with a CO2 laser — best for fine detail or small text that a debossing die would smear.

The patch then gets heat-pressed onto the cap (a Richardson 112 in most cases, but we also work with Richardson 115, 168, 168P, 256, Flexfit 110F, YP Classics 6245, Pukka, Imperial, Lost Hat Co, Zapped, Melin — anything with a flat structured front panel) and double-stitched at the perimeter. The double-stitch is what separates a hat that lasts five years from one that delaminates after a season in the sun.

We carry stock leather colors in saddle brown, chestnut, black, and natural tan, and we'll source other colors on request. Standard shapes are rectangle, square, oval, and shield — custom die-cut shapes (round, badge, state outline, polygon) add a one-time setup fee on the first run only, then run at standard pricing on reorders.

Pricing follows the same volume curve as our other hats: $28 at qty 1, $26 at 6+, $24 at 12+, all the way down to $16 at 200+. Lost Hat Co, Zapped, Pukka, Melin, and other specialty blanks carry an upcharge on the blank itself but follow the same -$2/-$4/-$6 discount ladder.

Leather Patch FAQ

LEATHER PATCH QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

What's the difference between debossed, embossed, and engraved leather?+
Debossed presses the logo into the leather with a heated steel die — the artwork sinks below the surface, giving the classic recessed look. Engraved uses a CO2 laser to burn the artwork into the surface, which reads slightly darker than the surrounding leather and handles intricate detail (small text, fine lines, gradients) better than debossing. Embossed raises the logo above the surface — less common, but available on request. We'll recommend based on your artwork.
Real leather or leatherette — and does it matter?+
Both, and yes. Genuine leather patches (we stock chestnut, saddle, black, and natural tan) have the irregularities, grain, and patina of real cowhide — they age beautifully and read as premium. Leatherette is a high-grade synthetic that gives a more uniform look at a lower cost, is fully vegan, and is what we recommend if you're matching exact corporate colors. The price difference at our volume is small; the look difference is significant.
Can you do a custom-shaped patch — round, shield, badge, oval?+
Yes. Our standard shapes are rectangle, square, and oval, but we cut custom shapes for any order — round, shield, badge, state outline, custom polygon. Send us a vector outline (AI or SVG) and we'll cut to spec. Custom shapes have a one-time die setup fee on the first run only.
What blanks work best for leather patch decoration?+
Structured caps with a flat front panel are ideal. Richardson 112 (the most-ordered snapback in custom hats), Richardson 115 (low-pro mesh-back), Richardson 168/168P (flat-bill), Flexfit 110F (fitted-feel snapback), and YP Classics 6245 (unstructured dad hat) all take a leather patch cleanly. Six-panel structured trucker silhouettes work best; very soft unstructured camper caps with curved front panels don't hold a patch as flat.
What's the lead time on leather patch hats?+
Standard production is 2–3 weeks after proof approval. Custom-shape die-cut patches on the first run add about a week. Rush production (under 2 weeks) is available for an upcharge — ask before you order if you have a hard event date. Locals around West Georgia can pick up at the Carrollton shop and skip the shipping window altogether.
